Biosketch

Prof. Masanori Hatakeyama (Professor emeritus, The University of Tokyo) is concurrently Laboratory Head, Institute of Microbial Chemistry, Microbial Chemistry Research Foundation and also Specially Appointed Professor at the Institute for Genetic Medicine, Hokkaido University.

Prof. Hatakeyama’s research interest is in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of gastric cancer, specifically focusing on the role of Helicobacter pylori oncoprotein CagA, which is delivered into gastric epithelial cells via the bacterial microsyringe (type IV secretion system). He is serving as Editor-in-Chief, Cancer Science, the Official Journal of the Japanese Cancer Association (JCA) (Impact factor 6.716; Q1 journal). He has published over 170 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and has an H-index of 59 with over 13,000 citations. He received Incitement Award of the Japanese Cancer Association (1991), The JCA-Mauvernay Award (2006), Sagawa Special Award (2011), Medical Award of the Japan Medical Association (2014), Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Medical Prize (2016), The Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (2019), The Tomizo Yoshida Prize (2019), and The Princess Takamatsu Cancer Research Fund Prize (2022).

Prof. Hatakeyama received his MB (Bachelor of Medicine) from the School of Medicine, Hokkaido University in 1981 and passed the national examination for medical practitioners in 1981. He received his Ph.D degree from the Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University in 1986. He conducted his post-doctoral training at the Whitehead Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
